Résumé

This objective of the present preliminary study was to evaluate the cognitive autonomy of patients suffering from brain lesions by an assessment of several executive and emotional processing supporting this ability. For this purpose, a test of management of everyday life problems (TGV in French) was designed with three sections: detection of problems, generation of solutions and estimation of the seriousness of problems. Control items (to rule out completion bias) and “unexpected” items (to assess cognitive flexibility in the generation of solutions) were also included. Twenty four healthy participants, 22 institutionalized patients with degenerative pathology and 20 non-institutionalized patients with brain injury or stroke completed the task. The group of institutionalized patients obtained significantly lower performances than the control group for each of the collected variables, generating an empirical validity. The group of non-institutionalized patients obtained significantly lower performances than the control group only for generating solutions. The analysis of individual performances showed a high heterogeneity in impairments, which can be useful in the diagnostic of cognitive autonomy and in the cognitive care of these patients.
