Developing a contextual database using census and other administrative data. The exemple of the “Trajectoires et Origines 2” database
Résumé
Socioeconomic measures characterizing the context where people live is increasingly important in understanding demographic phenomena. This paper presents the procedure to build a database of contextual indicators derived from the French population census and other administrative sources. The method is illustrated using the example of the contextual database built for the Trajectories and Origins 2 survey. The database contains about 400 indicators for each of the six selected geographical levels (from neighborhood to sub-regional units). The choice of the indicators was made by the survey’s scientific board and relies primarily on the survey’s main topic (i.e. immigrants’ and their descendants’ individual trajectories and living conditions) and on the availability of administrative data at a sub-national level. This database can potentially be built from any other censuses and administrative sources and linked to all surveys that have collected a geographical code of respondents’ place of residence.
