Face Recognition and Functional Analysis

Résumé

A cornerstone of evolutionary psychology is the hypothesis of a face recognition module within the mind-brain, whose function is its selected effect. In this chapter, I review substantial parts of the available evidence and I offer a critique of this hypothesis. First, we cannot localize this module in a specific part of the brain like the fusiform face area (FFA), and as a consequence, we need a functional analysis (in Cummins style) of the organization of brain components involved in face recognition. Second, I give reasons to doubt that events in the EEA determine current mental abilities as postulated by standard evolutionary psychology. Finally, I point out that the modular view leaves important questions unanswered, like the type of developmental trajectory that leads to the ability of the human adult to recognize faces, and the specific type of social context in which face recognition may have become crucial to our ancestors.
