Battery storage value for grid expansion planning under high penetration of renewable energies

Résumé

An increasing amount of solar and wind power installations will be connected to the grid in the coming years. In Europe, as the distribution grid available capacity is progressively saturated, a growing share of renewables connects to the sub transmission grid (meshed grid, 60 150 kV). Battery storage can potentially defer or replace line reinforcements, especially when located in the vicinity of solar and wind farms. Grid Expansion Planning approaches increasingly consider storage along traditional grid solutions.
