Experimental evolution of Barley yellow dwarf virus in cultivated and wild Poaceae species

Résumé

Barley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV; genus Luteovirus, family Luteoviridae) is one of the most damaging virus of cereals, infecting both wild and cultivated Poaceae species. In the field, the presence of different host plant species can impact strongly the probability of epidemic outbreaks. The latter can be due, for instance, to viral mutations showing pleiotropic effects on different hosts. Few studies consider the effect of both cultivated and wild species on the virus evolution. Moreover, one or two viral genes are usually sequenced and the complete viral genome is rarely studied. In this context, our goal was to study (i) the impact of the host species (cultivated or wild) as well as (ii) the impact of the host change on BYDV population structure and fitness.
