Combination of an arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus and a trehalose treatment to control powdery mildew in wheat

Résumé

Bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), the second most widely produced cereal in the world, is a crop strongly impacted by fungal diseases like powdery mildew caused by Blumeria graminis f.sp. tritici (Bgt). The use of conventional fungicides still remains necessary to secure wheat yields. However, the emergence of fungicide resistance in the pathogen population and the potential threat towards the environment and human health lead to the development of new control strategies. Previous work carried out in our laboratory has demonstrated the protective activity of various inducers or living organisms against powdery mildew. Our study focused on the association of arbuscular myorrhizal fungi Funneliformis mosseae (Fm) incorporated in the culture substrate and the foliar application of trehalose (Trh). The three treatments, Fm, Trh and Fm+Trh conducted to a wheat protection against Bgt under controlled conditions by amount 70%, no addition effect of wheat protection was observed for the combined treatment. The protective effect may clearly due to induction of plant defenses, an elicitation of molecular defense markers encoded pathogenesis-related proteins, proteins involved in flavonoids and polyamines synthesis, or antioxidant systems are observed in leaves of plants in response to the three treatments without Bgt challenge. Microscopic analysis revealed a higher accumulation of phenolic compounds at the site of fungal penetration attempts on leaves in response to the three treatments compared to the control.
