Kids story writers - POGO, Tell-Tale, Sprite

Abstract

Children express themselves in a "hundred languages" and they use what they know in one language, or modality, as a lever to gain fluency in others. This paper draws from EU project POGO-and related MIT projects TellTale and Sprite-to illustrate how digital media can be used to leverage children's own creative ways to blend speech and writing, to compose and contextualize text, and to link authors to audiences. We discuss what it means to be literate in the digital age, and what it takes for children to become so. We conclude by offering guidelines for the design of narrative environments for kids' composers.
