Early Natufian Architecture at Eynan-Mallaha. New Perspectives from Building Archaeology and 3D-GIS

Résumé

The archaeology of buildings is an interdisciplinary endeavour focused on reconstructing architectural techniques through the entire life-history of ancient constructions, from their initial design through to intentional dismantling and demolition. While this approach has had limited application to prehistoric buildings, from which typically few remains survive above the foundation courses, we have successfully applied it to an exceptionally well-preserved series of walls built by some of the last hunter-gatherers of the southern Levant in the Natufian period (13-11.6 ka Cal BC). The semi-circular walls (numbered 51-131) belong to a comparatively massive construction for this early period, initially exposed in the 1970s at the site of Eynan-Mallaha, and re-examined in 2022 as part of resumed excavations and re-exposure at the site. Walls 51-131 survived to a sufficient height (maximum 1.2 m) so as to allow detailed analyses of the building and architectural techniques. The two walls are part of an architectural sequence of at least three superimposed buildings (Shelters 131-51-62), associated with at least five distinct floor levels of intermingled domestic and burial activity, with evidence of hearths and postholes identified within the interior space. Our project combines archival high-resolution data with digital documentation and spatial analysis (GIS and 3D photogrammetry) to re-evaluate the sequence of events in the occupation, abandonment, restoration and reconstruction of the shelters, further taking into consideration the question of continuity in traditions of building and space use through generations in the life-history of the structure. Preliminary work allowed us to determine that the walls were built in relation to one-another and to identify different phases of construction or maintenance for each of them
