CANTOS GENERALES
Résumé
In American poetry, ‘Canto’ immediately calls to mind Ezra Pound’s Cantos. Everybody knows about Pound’s involvement with Italian fascism. I want to look at American long poems from the other side of the political spectrum. The Left will be my vantage point. This is partly why I refer in this paper’s title to Pablo Neruda, the Chilean Communist poet and his 400-page Canto General, published in Mexico City in 1950, which may well be the paradigmatic long poem from the American Left, if one takes, as I believe one should when discussing poetry from the Left, the continental view.
