Seasonal dynamic of benthic communities in coastal marshes (Charente-Maritime, France)

Résumé

Coastal marshes shelter a vast species diversity, thanks to a high diversity of environments and habitats. However, coastal areas are highly impacted by human activities, which can greatly affect the functional balance and benefits these environments deliver. Most of these ecosystems’ functions are provided by benthic microbial community, which regulation is complex. A major biotic parameter regulating this community is trophic interaction with the rest of the benthic community such as meiofauna and heterotrophic protists. Abiotic parameters are also decisive in benthic community regulation. Factors such as pollution, salinity, temperature or light affect organisms in many ways and should be considered while studying coastal ecosystem communities. This study’s aim is to assess the dynamic of benthic communities of the Charente Maritime marshes in a four seasons monitoring comparing 8 marshes of various salinities. Prokaryotic and meiofaunal abundances were estimated and chlorophyll a biomass was measured as a proxy of algal biomass. Biological information gathered were combined with environmental parameters using multivariate analyses. The results obtained showed that salinity was the main driver of community variation depicting a clear separation of salted and fresh marshes, with a more pronounced seasonal effect in fresh marshes. Organisms abundance suggest that prokaryotes could be used as good indicators in both marsh types and meiofauna in salted marshes. Environmental DNA analysis will later be conducted in all samples in order to better understand the effect of environment variables on community composition. All information gathered will later be useful to define potential bioindicators evaluating ecological statuses.
