Iron(III) chloride-catalyzed acetalisation of α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compounds towards odorant ketals
Résumé
Conjugation of a carbonyl function with a carbon-carbon double bond tends to limit the efficiency of conventional acetalisation procedures. In the present report, we describe our study of acetalisation of α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compounds, either linear, cyclic, aromatic and aliphatic with various 1,2-diols. We found that a simple and sustainable protocol relying on FeCl3 as the catalyst could lead to the desired ketals with acceptable yields and excellent selectivities. This approach is presented as a practical alternative to conventional procedures and has been used to generate a series of odorant ketals.
