'They don’t make traditional baguettes’: food inequality and alternative bread supply chains in rural Ardèche, France

Résumé

This communication proposes to discuss the notion of food inequality, namely in the context of so-called “alternative food networks” (Renting et al., 2003). I will deconstruct the various forms of food inequality present in institutional and social science spheres – financial or spatial access, inequality in terms of quantity or quality – as well as the epistemological and political roots of these different conceptions. I will then situate these discussions in a fine-grained ethnographic case study of an “alternative” bakery in rural Ardèche, France, that seeks not only to produce bread aligned with ideologies of durability and ecology – peasant wheat varieties, territorial and climatic adaptability – but that is also politically-oriented towards creating accessibility for diverse populations. We will see, however, that despite these efforts towards financial and spatial accessibility, certain important symbolic barriers prevent neighboring marginalized inhabitants from engaging in this alternative bread circuit. This transversal analysis is facilitated in part by an approach based on the lens of “supply chains,” through which I look at the interaction, coordination, and conflict between actors connected by variable ecological and economic ties; in this case, bakers, millers, farmers, and consumers. Ultimately, it remains crucial to examine within alternative food networks how inequalities are construed emically by different actors, how some aim to circumvent or transform these inequalities, and the political and practical barriers that can impede these efforts.
