French Museums in the Fifth Republic

Résumé

Museums have played a special role in the French political sphere of the Fifth Republic as privileged instruments for the construction of the modern state through the promotion of heritage. Sections of this chapter address the political and social implications of museums by examining their uses by state institutions and successive presidents, their changing role in society, and the issues surrounding the conception and inception of a postcolonial museum.
