Greener and more mechanically robust 3D acrylate composites with added tannin

Résumé

Greener and more mechanically robust 3D-printed structures were obtained by adding tannin to acrylate resin. Mimosa tannin particles (5-25wt.%) were incorporated into an acrylate resin formulated and 3D-printed to fabricate tannin-reinforced composites using stereolithography. FTIR spectroscopy and printing parameters highlighted the photoblocking behavior of the tannin particles by adsorption in the UV range and a reddening phenomenon characteristic of phenolic compounds. Tannin-containing samples showed a low penetration depth (from 322 to 127µm), thus improving the resolution control in the resin tank. The glass transition temperature decreased with the incorporation of stiff tannin microparticle, evidencing change in relaxation time, while mechanical properties improved with increasing tannin content. For instance, the inclusion of 10 wt.% tannin improved tensile strength, ductility, and Young's modulus by 110, 80, and 32%, respectively. The high resolution and improved mechanical performance demonstrate the promising use of tannin as a bio-based ingredient to produce accurate and reinforced structures.
