Résumé

Sasanian Studies in Georgia (Material Culture) The rise of the Sasanian state at the beginning of the 3rd century AD (about 224 year) was of great importance for the historical development of the South Caucasian countries, and particularly, for the Iberian kingdom, the earliest records of which are dated from the 4th-3rd centuries BC. Relations of Iberia with its great and powerful neighbor included all the spheres of political, social, economic and cultural life of the country. The traces of Iranian influence are still to be seen, to a certain extent, in the material culture, religion, language, and customs of Christian Georgia. Among rich archaeological findings in Georgia, most rare examples of Sasanian silverware, seals and coins are distinguished already from the Early Sasanian period. Georgian and foreign scholars have devoted a number of significant publications to their study. Already at the beginning of the last century, when the systematic study of Georgian cultural heritage began, the great scientist Giorgi Chubinashvili (1885-1973), the founder of the Georgian School of Art History, singled out the most important direction for the study of the history of Georgian art - the relationship with the Iranian world. In his fundamental works the significance of the influence of Sasanian Iran on the architecture and fine arts of Georgia in Late Antiquity and, what is even more interesting, of the Early Christian period is emphasized. This chain begins in the 4th c. and continues until the 6th, when Georgian art of the Middle Ages reached its classical, established form. The majority of the Sasanian artifacts discovered in Georgia are excellent seals. They began to arrive in East Georgia mainly from the 4th century. Most of them were imported. Many other specimens of the early art, which were found during archaeological excavations on the territory of Georgia, are the main sources testifying cultural and religious relations of the Iberian kingdom (Kartli) and Sasanian Iran: specimens of stone-carving, architectural decoration, metal works etc. Iberian-Sasanian silverware was developed in the workshops of ancient Iberia by Iberian masters while adhering to the style, images, and ornamentation of Sasanian art. This phenomenon has already been solidly documented in science. In this instance, the coexistence of ancient Iberian and Iranian art is exemplified by it. We may therefore say that this occurrence is a part of both Sasanian and Iberian art. This category of silverware, which was previously not numerous, has multiplied recently as a result of new scientific research and discoveries; new samples have been added to it, which we will also focus on in our presentation.
