Long-term modelling of the Lithuanian road network as an indicator of socio-territorial structures

Modélisation à long-terme du réseau routier lituanien comme indicateur des structures socio-territoriales

Résumé

This presentation will focus on a simulation of the Lithuanian coastal road network over three time periods (pre-Soviet, Soviet, post-Soviet) that are significant in terms of political, economic, and societal changes since the 20th century. The road network is considered as one of the geographical objects defining the spatial structures, organizations, interactions, dynamics, and interdependences of a territory. By modelling it as a mathematical graph, centrality indices can be used to analyze the properties of the network (accessibility, density, length of links, etc.). Indexes derived from the ‘Generic City’ concept provide additional comparison to identify the different functionalities and territorial structures, as well as their evolution, which reflects the impact of various political, economic, social, and cultural realities of a geographical space. This presentation will focus on a simulation of the Lithuanian coastal road network over three time periods (pre-Soviet, Soviet, post-Soviet) that are significant in terms of political, economic, and societal changes since the 20th century. Comparing the network between different periods by standardized indexes enables us to highlight changes in the economic functionality of the coastal region, the emergence of local centralities related to peri-urbanization and metropolisation or the effect of former geopolitical dynamics on the current organization of the territory.
