Edward Steichen ou l’objet photographique de l’imprimé à l’exposition
Résumé
We will study Edward Steichen's relationship with photography, particularly through his use
of the photomural. We will see how Steichen will go from photography to photomural
through scenography. We will discuss his greatest projects such as The 291 Gallery (1905),
Roxy-Theater at Rockefeller Center (1932), Road to Victory (1942), Family of Man (1955),
and finally The Bitters Years (1962). We will also discuss Roland Barthes and Allan Sekula's
criticisms of the instrumentalization of these images and will discuss the growing use of the
practice of photomurals in exhibitions.
