Secondary Residences in Paris: Between the Real City and Her Myth
Le Paris des résidences secondaires. Entre ville réelle et ville rêvée
Résumé
We describe and analyze here the experience of foreigners with secondary homes in Paris. We examine their routines, the kind of identity they assume in relation to the city, and Parisians’ perceptions of them. We then look at the consequences of their presence for the city itself and at why Paris is attractive to these people, while highlighting the symbolic journeys they imagine themselves making through the city. In dialogue with local residents and City Hall, these foreigners are caught up in the construction of what it means to be Parisian.
