L’Autoroute et le labyrinthe. Le Londres révolutionnaire de G.K. Chesterton (1874-1936)
Résumé
G.K. Chesterton was an intimate critic of the modernity which was emerging under his very eyes, moving from the Victorian era to the twentieth century. Calling for arts to take up the challenges set by the modern city, his imagination seems to be shaped by the city itself. London is far from being a mere setting in Chesterton’s fiction but turns into a fabulous living organism which is confronted to a crisis threatening its own survival. This is precisely what
Chesterton explores in Napoleon of Notting Hill, a dystopian fable in which the city turns into a battle-field confronting on the one hand a modernity which pushes man aside
for the sake of order and, on the other hand, a modernity which gives man the opportunity to resist through a labyrinthic chaos. The aim of this paper therefore is to present a fantastic and critical imaginary, shaped by the machinery of an urban modernity which will inspire postmodern visions of the city
