Co-design with Patients with Chronic Diseases for Information and Training Materials Related to Connected Implants

Résumé

In order to improve heart failure management, the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT Health) is financing for 3 years a multidisciplinary and multi-stakeholder research project on a connected implantable device named "MyHeartSentinel". Thanks to this subcutaneous implant, the objective is to be able to detect heart failure aggravation from the patients' cardiorespiratory data, and therefore adapt their treatment as soon as possible to avoid emergency hospitalizations. For the human and social sciences team, the key challenge is to involve patients in the development of digital supports about the implant. In particular, it is about co-designing a study with a small team of patients as collaborators, in order to integrate the future monitored patients' needs in education and training. We brought together these patients to assist us not only in designing the study aiming at identifying the patients' needs, but also in following the development of the digital application which will provide services linked with the connected implants. During our interviews, we used affect stories that focused on their health care experience, in order to bring out collective and organizational dynamics involved in heart failure management.
