Information technology-enabled dynamic capabilities : the role of the cooperative capabilities in local markets

What are the constituent of the IT enabled dynamic capabilities that generate the activity of the firm ? How do firms adapt their IT enabled dynamic capabilities to match a turbulent environment and deglobalizing environment (Mikalef and al., 2017) ? To address these questions, the present study seeks to empirically explore the relationship between Information technology-enabled dynamic capabilities and cooperative capabilities in building market performance. This paper examines the roles of dynamic and collaborative capabilities, and information systems in organizations and how these relate to activity of the firm. Following the literature review, the hypotheses are developed. These hypotheses are tested using data collected via a survey involving 1,448 firms. Implications of the results are then discussed. Given that firms are operating in increasingly complex environments, it is helpful to examine the capabilities within firms to see how these can be configured to optimize performance. In the theoretical literature, dynamic capabilities (DC)s are identified as activity factors, particularly with regard to the proper use of information systems (IS). Nevertheless, this is usually done regardless of the diversity of organizations. In this paper, we use the Information technology-enabled dynamic capabilities view (Macher, 1986 ; Oh et al. 2014). Our contribution is twofold. First, we highlight a heterogeneity in the companies with a relative opposition between the local companies having a strong colaborative capacities (CCs) for cooperation and collaboration and companies of international influence with rather a high level of (DC). Secondly, we show that local companies build their performance without relying on IS but more by mobilizing (CC). Multidimensional data analysis methods are employed in order to develop a typology of companies according their performance. Four profiles of performance are proposed then explained using the discriminant model with (DC), (IS) and (CC) explanatory themes.
