Résumé

The preventive excavation of the castral chapel provided an opportunity to revisit the origins of Châteaubriant castle. The curved, east-west arasis uncovered beneath the choir of the large Gothic chapel, and dated by the furniture to the first half of the 11th century, could be the apse of the castral chapel of the castrum brientii, first mentioned around 08. The building was destroyed between the late 12th and mid-13th centuries. A very large Gothic chapel, 7 m long and 0 m wide, with walls 0 m thick, was then rebuilt. The single nave is divided into five bays by six arches, of which only the truncated columns remain. The choir and nave were divided by a liturgical barrier, traces of which were found in negative on the mortar floor. The south wall features two large arcades that would have given access to the seigniorial courtyard to the south. This is a very large religious edifice, with a very sober plan close to the architecture of the churches of the mendicant orders. Its construction can be dated to the second half of the 13th century. The excavation also uncovered a 13th-century circular tower in the north-west corner of the château, opposite the chapel. This tower, 0 m in diameter, has been preserved on two levels, with vestiges of arches on the upper floors.
