Inventorying quasicrystal atomic surfaces by watershed algorithm

Résumé

How to make sure that the traditional visual examination of two-dimensional cuts of 6-D density maps does not miss any matter? We have developed an algorithm for exhaustive search of atomic surfaces in the six-dimensional unit cell. The algorithm, originated in classical watershed segmentation, has been tested on the diffraction data for the well-studied icosahedral binary quasicrystal $\mathrm{Cd}_{5.7}\mathrm{Yb}$.
