TOULMED, an inference engine which deals with imprecise and uncertain aspects of medical knowledge

Résumé

TOULMED is an inference engine, capable of accomodating imprecision and uncertainty, which is developed and experimented in medical applications. The illustrative examples in this paper are taken from the application to the treatment of diabetes. The paper emphasizes the importance of the management of imprecision and uncertainty in order to take into account all the nuances of the medical knowledge. More particularly, a comparative example is provided where the same medical knowledge is processed with and without a treatment of imprecision and uncertainty (which is dealt with in the mathematical framework of possibility theory).
