Perception of ecological intensification from Sundanese fish farmers in a periurban area (Bogor, West Java)

Résumé

The peri-urban aquaculture landscape of West Java is particularly dense and varied on its technico-economic and societal aspects. Interactions between the socioeconomic and ecological processes that operate in this agroecosystem are diversified offering perspectives for ecological intensification (EI). However, conceptually and practically, EI encompasses several dimensions linked to cultural, social expectation and agroecosystemic insertion of aquaculture. The appraisal of perception of EI fish farmers is therefore required before implementation of ecologically intensified aquaculture system. This evaluation step is also needed to foster participatory development and promoting a better ownership of concepts and realization of EI. In the frame of the European project IMTA-EFFECT/COFASP and with the cooperation of the RIFAFE Bogor, evaluation of the perception of EI of Sundanese fish-farmer from Bogor district was performed. This study aimed: to catch the representation of EI by fish farmers and their motivation to endorse an "eco-behavior". Outline a typology of Eco-fish farmer according to predefined eco profiles. Two half-day discussions meetings were organized gathering more than 80 volunteer fish farmers from several villages in Bogor district. A questionnaire was submitted to focus group of fish famers (4-10 individuals per group), and animation and discussions
