Notes on Some of the Abbasid Amphorae of Istabl ʿAntar-Fustat (Egypt)

Résumé

A number of different methods have been used to analyze some Egyptian amphorae (type Late Roman Amphora 7, LRA 7) attributed to the Abbasid period, which were recovered in one of the soundings carried out at the site of Istabl CAntar-FustatG. as chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry and botanical analyses have revealed several compounds that seem to identify the contents and resinous inner coating of the amphorae. Indeed the analyses revealed that the amphorae were produced in Middle Egypt and that they were intended for transporting wine from this region of production; they also revealed that these lost containers were reused for other domestic purposes and in particular for the conservation of fatty products.
