Taming cancer. Affected bodies, mirrored emotions and challenges for patients and their loved ones.

Résumé

One French person in 10 helps a loved one with cancer, this help being related to treatment compliance, accompaniment to medical appointments and chemotherapy sessions as well as to the daily life of the sick person. This chapter shows why relatives are brought to play are presentative role of (para)medical care. It focuses on a collective survey CORSAC carried out by observations and in-depth interviews either in the presence of relatives, or during which the question of relatives/caregivers was expressly addressed. In the same way that there are major differences between caregivers who have or have not encountered cancer, there are also major differences between patients with no experience of cancer, including among their relatives, and those who had already undergone serious episodes of health disruption and/or had accumulated a certain amount of expertise about their disease during their treatment.
