Do Closer Relationships Increase Content Similarity? Assessing Transnational Agenda-Setting Influence of Chinese Media on Twitter

Résumé

The aim of this study was to analyze transnational agenda setting from the perspective of mediated public diplomacy. Using the Belt and Road Initiative Forums as example cases, we examined the transnational agenda-setting influence of Chinese media on Twitter. Through analysis of tweets posted during the 2017 and 2019 forums, we found that countries that joined the Belt and Road Initiative had more favorable perceptions of Chinese media content than countries that did not join. However, the overall agenda-setting influence of Chinese media is limited. The results also show a decline in interest in discussing the Belt and Road Initiative on Twitter over time. The findings suggest that China’s goal of using the Belt and Road Initiative to enhance its soft power was partially successful.
