Journalists’ modalisations and deformations of reported speech in the press discourse about Brexit : the attribution to plural sources

Résumé

In a corpus-based analysis of the use of reported speech regarding the Brexit debate, the use of plural sources is to be regarded as a way for the journalist to add comments on the speech of political figures, and to distort its original meaning. The corpus is made up of 90 press articles sampled from newspapers with different editorial approaches: The Guardian, The Daily Telegraph and The Independent. After an insight about the different types of plural sources used in the corpus, namely authentically plural, vague or identified, this contribution deals with the different strategies associated with this phenomenon. It tackles the question of fidelity to the original speech, the journalist’s interventions on the original speech – that can go as far as creating or recreating reported speech, as well as the attribution to plural sources as a mean to discredit of the source and / or the reported speech. Another way in which journalists use plural sources is by referring to “experts”, who bear an authoritative position, transforming their speech into an unquestionable argument, especially when the original speech is hard to infer or unavailable. Nevertheless, the authoritative position of these experts and the way their speech is used by the journalist as a way to legitimize press discourse also has to be discussed, especially regarding the editorial positioning of the different newspapers involved in the corpus.
