Leveraging digital tools for research purposes in remote educational settings

Résumé

In an ongoing study conducted as part of the Form@link project (Forissier et al., 2020), primary school students aged 8-11 from two French overseas territories in the Caribbean, Guadeloupe and Saint Barthelemy, are engaged in a collaborative exploration of a shared topic, in particular sustainable water management. The study employs computer-mediated communication as a means of fostering collaborative learning within an instructional approach that emphasizes the importance of context-effects (Anjou, 2018; Chartofylaka, 2022; Forissier, 2019). The instructional scenarios are designed to promote the emergence of contextual effects and involve students working in small groups within their respective territories, focusing on specific sub-themes related to the overall study topic, and sharing their findings with the other class. Additionally, the students have the opportunity to participate in field trips and receive visits from experts at their schools. This communication aims to present approaches for introducing digital tools that foster collaboration among students in a research project. Additionally, it provides a summary of the specific ways these tools have been utilized during the experiment, along with illustrative examples. One example of the students' activities is the creation of digital materials that serve to support their verbal communication. With the guidance of their teachers, the students collaborate to produce digital materials such as slideshows that incorporate written elements and photos. This process, as described by Marcel (2002), serves multiple purposes for both the teachers and researchers involved. The resulting documents not only facilitate the students' oral presentations in front of the camera but also allow for the visualization and discovery of distant contexts. Moreover, from a research standpoint, these documents enable the tracking of progress in synchronous exchanges and contribute to the analysis of the ongoing pedagogical experimentation.
