Di eroi, vittime e donatori: riflessi ideologici nei racconti di vendetta del tardo periodo Edo

Résumé

Within the range of dramatis personae typical of late Edo tales of vengeance, the avenger, the victim, and the donor are extremely important: the avenger is the character that directs the plot, while, without the victim, there would be no vengeance. Finally, the donor is the agent who endows the hero with a magical weapon or skill, acquired after extensive physical training. Late Edo tales of vengeance, or katakiuchimono, were a rather prolific literary subgenre, born of the Kansei Reform and intended to disseminate to readers the neo-Confucian orthodoxy of the military government. The propaganda, which initially focused mainly on the Confucian tenet, evolved with time. My aim is to show the evolution of intellectual paradigms in late Edo tales of vengeance by analyzing the transformations that occurred in both the dramatis personae and the morphological structure of the texts.
