Rethinking the construction of ages; exit of childhood and plural temporalities
The article stresses how children think, experience and govern a time of uncertainty: the end of childhood and the coming of age. Through the example of bodily changes, the text shows the inadequacy of some terms (e.g. pre-adolescence) or concepts (e.g. the notion of stage of development), to emphasize the plurality of the shifts experienced by children 9 to 13 years old, and the way they are entangled in personal, family and peers’ history, in institutional and scientific stages, in positions related to gender and sexual orientation. Unique and personal experiences combine this diversity, in transitions and «situations of age» (in the Mannheim’s terms), contextual and unstable, more than a ‘new’ social categorization.
