Since the Chinese Communist Party came to power in Peking (now Beijing) in 1949, deaths in China had only ever once outnumbered births. This was in 1961, when the collectivist policy known as the “Great Leap Forward” had led to a considerable fall in food production, in turn causing a sharp increase in death rates and fewer births. Yet since 2022, China seems to have engaged in a depopulation trend. Why?
