A Multi-Criteria Sustainability Measurement For Supplier Assessment Using Fuzzy AHP Approach

Résumé

Sustainability performance in supply chain has been recognized as competitive indicator for business. There are various existing approaches that organizations apply to evaluate supplier’s performance on sustainable supply chain management (sSCM). Traditionally, organizations consider criteria such as price, quality, flexibility, etc. when measuring supplier performance. While the articles on the selection and evaluation of suppliers are abundant, those that consider sustainability issues are rather limited. This paper explores sustainable supply chain initiatives and examines the problem of identifying an effective model based on the Triple Bottom Line (TBL) approach (economic, environmental, and social aspects) for supplier selection operations in supply chains. Design/methodology/approach: In this work a fuzzy analytical hierarchy process (FAHP) approach is employed for the supplier assessment problem. First the selection criterion according company’s objectives are determined. Then, the pair-wise comparisons are made on a fuzzy basis. Finally, the sustainability performance of the five alternative suppliers are ranked and analysed. This work proposes the criteria weight determination in FAHP model and compares the results with two common methods i.e. extent analysis (EA) method and Lambda-Max (LM) method. Findings: The EA method cannot use to estimate the priority weight because there is a possibility to obtain a zero weight to the criteria. It will lead to make a wrong decision. The proposed method obtains the same rank of supplier’s performance as the LM method. Originality/value: There are many different applications of FAHP in literature and some of these have found applications in sustainability performance assessment of supplier. This work proposes a new method for determining the fuzzy criteria weighting by modifying from the EA method. Keywords: Sustainability, Fuzzy analytical hierarchy process, supplier performance assessment
