Résumé

This chapter examines the party politics of Brexit from 2015-20. It analyzes how UK parties defined themselves in relation to Brexit. The referendum campaign was not fought along traditional lines and all parties subsequently had to adapt to a new environment in which traditional party loyalty was suddenly much less relevant. Theresa May tried, and failed, to provide a unifying post-Brexit vision. Her failure hinged on the 2017 general election, which exposed deep faultlines in both parties and left the Conservatives dependent on the DUP for a parliamentary majority. An already weak government was undermined by a flurry of ministerial resignations and a poor barganing strategy vis-à-vis the EU. Boris Johnson’s success as May’s replacement was built on clearer communication about getting Brexit done and a willingness to adopt an unconventional anti-austerity platform. Brexit coincided, therefore, with the dealignment and realignment of political loyalties in British politics.
