Résumé

The movement of church restoration that began in the 1830s contributed to the restitution of many medieval buildings with polychromy, freely inspired by medieval paintings. While the theoreticians and architects who contributed to this movement have attracted the interest of researchers in recent decades, the workshops that worked on these projects are less well known. The paper focuses on the Italian painter-plasterer Maurizio Belli, active in the diocese of Clermont (France) between 1852 and 1873. The paper draws up a typology of the ornamental repertoire of the Belli workshop, author not only of wall paintings but also of plaster reliefs. It also discusses the context of the commissions, which reveals the taste of the patrons for medievalism.
