Implemented concept mapping strategy for writing SQL queries

Lynda Farza

Résumé

Concept mapping is considered an effective teaching and learning tool for representing and organizing knowledge structures. It has been used successfully in higher education. Several studies have shown the value of integrating it into different teaching and learning contexts. This paper suggests using a concept mapping method for teaching and learning SQL queries. Our purpose is to examine students' perceptions of the use of the concept mapping strategy in solving SQL query problems. To determine the effectiveness of the proposal, a survey was designed and submitted to forty-three non-computer science engineering students. The results of this survey revealed that most students found that using concept maps helps them to better understand SQL queries and increases their ability to resolve complex problems. Generally, students found it motivating to work with the concept maps and were satisfied with using them as a first step in writing SQL query statements. The study carried out allows us to conclude that the concept map can be a useful didactic tool in computer science education.
