“Pseudo(-) in Greek: a morpheme in categorization, approximation and depreciation"
Résumé
In this paper we present corpus data with a focus on the examination of some under- studied semantic and pragmatic aspects of the morpheme pseudo- in Greek, generally considered to be part of the paradigm of typical evaluative prefixes. Following Vassil- iadou et al. (forthcoming), we distinguish three readings of categorial approximation for pseudo-X: (a) it does not belong to the category X; (b) it belongs to the category but is not its best exemplar; (c) there is fuzzy or undecidable categorization. To this, we examine the ways pseudo- combines with the element that follows it, specifically when it is a noun. Frequencies show high matching of psevðo- to the notion of ‘not in the category’, no typographic marking necessary, while psefto- shows that what it is linked with ‘is not the best exemplar of the category’ and marks qualitative depreciation, often with multiple typographic markers. Appearances with double marking (hyphen, scare quotes or parentheses) suggest some linguistic insecurity concerning pseudo-’s (graphic) status along speaker’s subjective attitude.
