The yangsaeng / wisaeng debate in terms of code switching

Résumé

Two very similar terms, Yangsaeng or "nourishing of life" and wisaeng or "protecting of life", today have different connotations and denotations. The first, based on the understanding of the universe, the nature and the human body (and society) in East Asian tradition and closely related with medical tradition of this area and Daoism, signifies ideas and practices concerning healthy and long life, such as respiratory control, qigong exercise, dietary treatment, special medication, regulation of sexual intercourse, selection of environment, meditative exercise and even moral practices. The second, based on western medical tradition and modern sciences, biology and chemistry in particular, essentially refers to prevention of epidemics, treatment of diseases and their institutionalization. This one, which existed since long before in East Asian literature with different meaning from that of yangsaeng, was chosen for a corresponding term to the western modern hygiene (by Nagayo Sensai , 1874). The modern idea of hygiene was introduced with the term wisaeng in Korea in the late 19th century. In some texts, discourses and titles of book from this period, two terms seem to be confused, misused, misunderstood or used by semantic extension for each other. These are in the beginning of encounter, confrontation, conflict and mutual adaption of two different sets of knowledges and practices as well as two different ways of seeing the world and the human body.
