Metamorphoses of aesthetic experience
Métamorphoses de l’expérience esthétique
Résumé
This article aims at restoring the history of the concept of aesthetic experience. More precisely, it highlights the fact that the notion of aesthetic experience underwent a double metamorphosis between the eighteenth and the twentieth century. Whereas aesthetic experience designated in the classical period the experience of sensitive beauty, it came in the twentieth century to qualify exclusively the experience of works of art. Since the second half of the twentieth century, the extension of the concept of aesthetic experience has been widened beyond the world of art. Henceforth, it refers to the experience that we make of worlds, atmospheres, or environments.
