Verb formation in Amharic
Résumé
Amharic, an Ethiosemitic language, uses templatic morphology in verb formation, whereby the distinction between inflection and derivation becomes blurred. Due to diachronic changes, Amharic acquired distinct lexicalized patterns to form the simplex stem of verbs, which are known as Verb Type A, B and C. These patterns differ in the vowel following the root-initial consonant and the gemination of the (historical) penultimate consonant.
