Le culte du serpent dans les cités méridionales de Maurétanie tingitane (Volubilis, Banasa)

Résumé

Recent research on the altars kept at Rabat Museum terracotta altar from a totally new point of view. Indeed, one can notice a perforation about level with the die from which four snake bodies are developing at the front and back of the altar. That circular household altars which were discovered in Volubilis and Banasa. Thus, the presence of snakes might shed new light on the function of the perforations of those unusual altars and show how fervent a snake related cult was in Tingitana southern cities during the 2nd and 3rd found in many myths and cultures. In Ancient Rome religion, the Genius protector of domus Volubilis, is represented as a snake. One can also make a link with several Ancient Rome, « Berber-Ancient Rome » hybrids or local gods who have it as an attribute.
