Résumé

Early 2013 saw the first field season of the joint French-Egyptian mission in the Wadi Abu Subeira, during which we discovered rock art panel Locus 10. The tableau, pecked into the upturned surface of a large sandstone boulder situated on the wadi floor, bears complex scenes that contribute new elements for the Predynastic iconographic repertoire. Documentation of this panel presented a significant challenge, however, since the rock surface was very worn and almost illegible under general field viewing conditions. In order to document the scene, Kathryn Piquette applied the computational photographic technique, Reflectance Transformation Imagery (RTI). It is the result of this work, one of the first attempts at the time to apply RTI to Egyptian rock art, that is presented in this paper. In addition to demonstrating the viability and benefits of RTI for rock art recording in challenging field contexts, we present the contents of the Locus 10 planel and briefly consider the motivations and processes that led to its creation, as well as its past visibility within the wider ancient landscape
