Tools to analyse, set up and evaluate LANSOD training courses

Résumé

This talk focuses on two tools which can be useful to teachers, course designers and evaluatorswhen setting up and evaluating language courses in higher education. The analytical framework isa synthetic table which groups questions deemed relevant to analyse a language training course. The questions are focused on the context in which the course is set (at European, national andinstitutional levels), on learner characteristics (e.g. autonomy and motivation, professional needsin English), on teacher characteristics (e.g. training, skills and knowledge), as well as on theobjectives of the language class, to name but a few. The dashboard aims at designing andevaluating a course; the objectives of the language course are aligned with relevant means to reachthose goals, as well as with assessment tools to evaluate the efficiency of the course. These twotools draw from various disciplines and sub-disciplines: English for Specific purposes, needsanalysis, second language acquisition theories, as well as instructional design. The framework anddashboard were initially created to design and evaluate an English course for undergraduatemusicology students in Lille (France) between 2016 and 2018 and it is argued they could be usedmore widely in LANSOD settings (LANguages for Students of Other Disciplines) to design andevaluate language courses adapted to the learning context and the needs of the learners.
