Thermal management of LEDs packages: Numerical study of natural convection heat transfer in partially opened enclosures

Résumé

This work is part of the thermal management of LEDs lamps and deals with a numerical study of heat transfer by natural convection in a partially opened cavity containing a rectangular heat sink. Two openings are located on the sidewalls of the cavity. Three opening lengths (B=0.25, 0.5, 0.75) and three positions (Position 1: on the bottom, position 2: in the middle and position 3: on the top) are tested in this work. Their effects on the rate of heat transfer have also been elaborated. It was found that the average Nusselt number is improved when the length ratio of the opening increases from B = 0.25 to B = 0.75. Moreover, it was found that long openings (B=0.75) are not affected by their positions. However, for the case of short openings (B=0.25), it is recommended to avoid placing the openings at the bottom of the side walls of the cavity (Position 1) as this ensures the lowest rate of convective heat transfer.
