Regional Planning and Regional Design in Greater Paris

Résumé

In spite of the ambitious international competition of Le Grand Paris that took place in 2008, it remains very difficult to find a strong image that would embody Paris as a region. Why is that so? Our chapter intends to shed light on this paradox. We argue that the strong image of the city of Paris has for a long time hampered the emergence of a visionary approach for the broader region, and that the early development of the regional storytelling was reduced to verbal metaphors. Then, we go back to the 2008 competition: What set it off? Who were the main actors? What were their intentions? Finally, we look at its outcomes, and analyse its consequences ten years after the competition. At first sight, it seems that the inconspicuous work of regional planning has outcompeted the fiery gestures of regional design … but is this entirely true?
