Clarinet-making in the early 19th century in La Couture-Boussey. An overview of technical, economical and sociological aspects.

Résumé

Situated in northern France, to the west of Paris (in Normandy), this village, is known as the historic home of woodwinds. The musical instruments manufacturing industry began to develop there in the 17th century and large families of instrument makers and musicians like the Hotteterres, the Lots, the Martins, the Buffets, the Godfroys, the Thibouvilles, and the Leblancs all contributed to the location's reputation. The gradual replacement of oboes with clarinets in French Military Bands, starting around 1750, was a relevant factor in the development of clarinet production in France. If the first clarinet makers known in Paris are of German origin, around 1770 makers as Prudent Thierriot, Dominique Portahux or Martin and Gilles Lot were already well established. Between the end of the 18th century and the beginning of the 19th, the clarinet production in La Couture-Boussey can rely on the presence of many families, all interconnected through marriages and working relations, also producing flutes, flageolets, oboes and, less frequently, bassoons. It was probably the Auger family who made the first clarinets around 1760, soon followed by the Thibouvilles, Noblets, Buffets and many more. Many makers in the 1820’s established boutiques in the capital and marked their instruments “Paris”, a wise commercial strategy, while keeping the workshops in the village. A large number of Parisian branded instruments were in fact manufactured in La Couture, and it is also possible that several village makers worked as subcontractors and/or that instruments were sold without being marked. The increasing number of makers participating to the Exhibition of Products of French Industry (1798 - 1849) and to the National and World fairs (from 1844 on) and the patents deposited, are also an indication of the richness of the production. The paper will examine the clarinet making in the early 19th century in La Couture-Boussey, providing an overview of technical, economical and sociological aspects, and will highlight a few collaborations virtuoso-makers during the second half of the century.
