Validation in French of a brief suicide screening tool for online use – SIDAS-FR

Résumé

Introduction/aim: Identifying people at risk of suicide is a central step in online suicide prevention practices. However, few suicide risk identification tools have been validated in French and none of them have been validated for online use. The purpose of this study is to translate and validate the Suicidal Ideation Attributes Scale (SIDAS), a scale developed for online use, into French. Materials/methods: A reverse translation protocol was used (Sousa and Rojjanasrirat, 2010). Validation of psychometric properties was performed via an online study (N = 2304 French-speaking Quebec participants; n = 968 participants with suicidal ideation). Internal consistency was assessed by Cronbach's alpha and factor structure by confirmatory factor analysis. Convergent validity was examined by correlating the SIDAS-FR with the SSI-SR, BHS, PHQ-9, and K10. Interpretation thresholds were calculated by ROC curve analyses. Results: The translation of the SIDAS-FR was considered acceptable by a panel of experts and service users. The SIDAS-FR demonstrated high internal consistency (α = .83), a unifactorial structure similar to the original version, and strong convergent validity. Two cutoffs for interpretation appeared optimal: a score ≥ 13 for moderate severity and ≥ 20 for high severity of suicidal ideation. The SIDAS-FR demonstrated excellent psychometric properties for various age and gender subgroups. Discussion: The excellent psychometric properties of the SIDAS-FR support its use as a simple and effective tool for online screening for suicidal ideation in both adolescents and adults in the general population. Conclusion: Screening is an integrative part of suicide risk assessment and the use of validated brief instruments such as SIDAS-FR in face-to-face and online contexts can support decision making to allocate risk assessment and intervention resources adequately. Generalised use of standardised instruments does not replace in-depth clinical assessment.
