Taking up nyctalope tools to take care of the night

Résumé

My paper is part of my thesis research that deals with cities’ dark interstices and the emotions they generate. At the intersection of night studies, feminist studies and urban geography, this research uses the vigilance brought to the work of care as a tool structuring the methodological protocol, making it possible to re-subjectify the investigation process. The qualitative methodology of this research is based on nocturnal explorations of the darkest places of the city, as well as on a series of interviews and nocturnal guided tours. On a nocturnal fieldwork that explores the spaces that carry a strong emotional charge, it’s all about finding strategies to manage fear, to handle the unforeseen. Plus, particular attention is given to consent and confidentiality through the relationship with the interviewees, provided the creation of benevolent spaces of care; especially since the position of listening and collecting what is intimate is a strong methodological issue here, that care work can help overcome. Care work, as an ethical and political issue has the ability to enable a mutual empowerment of the inhabitants of the night. Both self-care and caring about the city stand for what can make it possible to overcome academic and intimate boundaries to reach a kind of consent to the night and finally be able to take good care of the night.
