Chapter 14 - How history can help present research of new antimicrobial strategies: the case of cutaneous infections’ remedies containing metals from the Middle Age Arabic pharmacopeia

Résumé

History can be a vast source of information, as long as we can have access to manuscripts dealing with pharmacopeia. The medieval Arab period is considered the Golden Age of ancient medicine, bringing together the knowledge of many ancient civilizations while continuously improving them. We have based this review on symptoms reflecting bacterial infections and have observed the frequent use of plant and metal combinations. Metals have been overlooked in traditional pharmacopeia studies but were abandoned beginning of the XXth century, in part due to their toxicity. In recent years, metals, or organometallic combinations, have benefited from renewed interest, which has enabled to better characterize their role, their action, their toxicity, and has made possible to de-demonize their use in medicine. In turn, these studies have revived the study of metal–plant combinations within traditional pharmacopeias. The aim of this review is to take stock of this Arab Golden Age of medicine, focusing on the use of plant–metal combinations in the treatment of symptoms reminiscent of bacterial infections (skin diseases such as abscesses and boils). In order to better understand the use and contribution of metals, we felt necessary to give an overview of the use of metals in this past pharmacopeia, and of the current knowledge regarding the formulation and structure of metals in these remedies, which may have an important impact on their properties and toxicity.
